Numerical tests led by science
Industry leading platform
The Clevry assessment platform provides powerful insights into your candidates’ personality, ability and motivational drivers within the workplace. Gain a more well-rounded view of your future talent and their ability to perform in the role.
Choose from a range of psychometric reports including personality profiles, onboarding reports, team strengths and leadership reports so your new recruits can hit the ground running.
Our assessment division was originally founded as Criterion Partnership in 1991 by Richard Hunter, who prior to this co-built the OPQ at SHL.
Clevry’s personality and cognitive ability tests are based on rational model which means all our psychometric assessments have the highest predictive validity of different psychometric tests.
- Measuring distinct elements of personality (traits), not broad domains. Shows “strength of preference” on a scale, rather than categorising people on one side or another.
- Find our scale library here.
- Candidates’ responses are always compared to a norm group.
- High levels of reliability and validity.
- Accredited by The British Psychological Society.
Numerical reasoning tests enable recruiters to efficiently screen a large volume of candidates in the early stages of the hiring process. This saves time and resources by quickly identifying individuals with the required numerical skills.
The scoring is automated, reducing manual effort and ensuring consistency in evaluation. Recruiters can focus their time and expertise on interpreting results and engaging with candidates who have demonstrated the necessary numerical aptitude.
Numerical reasoning ability tests are scalable, allowing organisations to assess a large number of candidates without significantly increasing recruitment costs.
Numerical reasoning tests provide an objective and fair way to assess candidates based on their quantitative and analytical abilities.
Automated scoring helps to reduce the chance of bias related to gender, ethnicity, or other demographic factors, promoting a fair and more equitable hiring process.
Results from numerical ability tests have been found to be predictive of performance in roles that require numerical reasoning; such as working with analytics data, understanding and manipulating numerical information, working with financial data or performing cost calculations.
Clevry complies with UK GDPR and stores all data with UK datacentres. Our GDPR compliance is driven by our internal data security policies and experience with data protection laws since 1992.
Our data security policies are ISO27001 certified, ensuring high standards for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving our information security management system.

Numerical reasoning test FAQs
A numerical test is for roles where candidates will need to be comfortable with numbers, mathematical functions and interpreting data.
Candidates use number-based reference material to answer multiple-choice questions involving basic numerical comprehension such as arithmetic, reasoning, averages, percentages, and ratios. Tests are timed and candidates can use a calculator throughout (one of their own, not built into the test). The questions use minimal verbal information so are not reliant on verbal ability.
Numerical reasoning tests are particularly relevant for roles that involve working with numbers, data, financial information, or require strong analytical skills. Some examples include:
- Finance and Accounting Positions: Financial analysts, accountants, auditors.
- Data Analysis Roles: Data scientists, business analysts.
- Administrative Positions: Roles that involve budgeting, forecasting, or handling financial data.
- Operations and Logistics: Positions where numerical skills are crucial for managing inventory, supply chains, etc.
Numerical reasoning tests evaluate a candidate’s ability to interpret and analyse numerical data. The skills measured include:
- Basic arithmetic:
Testing the candidate’s proficiency in fundamental mathematical operations. - Data interpretation:
Assessing the ability to understand and draw conclusions from data presented in charts, graphs, or tables. - Financial analysis:
Evaluating skills in financial calculations and understanding. - Logical reasoning:
Testing logical deduction and problem-solving skills within a numerical context.
Integrating numerical tests into your hiring process offers several advantages:
- Efficiency:
Numerical tests provide a quick and standardised way to assess candidates, saving time in the initial screening process. - Objective assessment:
These tests help in minimising bias and subjectivity, providing a more objective evaluation of candidates based on their numerical skills. - Predictive validity:
Strong performance in numerical tests often correlates with success in roles that require analytical and quantitative skills. - Cost-effectiveness:
Compared to other assessment methods, numerical tests are a cost-effective way to evaluate a large pool of candidates.
